Animal Farm

Animal Farm

George Orwell
This satirical book tells the tale about a group of farm animals that overthrow their human owners in an attempt to create their own type of government, Animalism. The animals are at first successful, as “all animals are equal”, they all share in the work, and they all share in the profits (i.e. Communism). But, as time goes on the pigs begin to separate themselves from the other animals, claiming that their intelligence grants them access to more food and better shelter. A leader emerges from the pigs, and Napoleon begins to make Animal Farm into a totalitarian state. Eventually, the farm comes full circle, and in the end, the animals are no better off than they were with their human leader. Orwell does a good job of mimicking the Russian revolution and how Marx’s Communistic views failed when put into action in Russia.
