Shopgirl

Shopgirl

Steve Martin wrote and starred in Shopgirl, and I think he does a good job in serious roles. Mirabelle, a young, twenty-something college graduate, works at Saks as a sales person to bring in some money as she works towards furthering her career as an artist. In the span of a few weeks, she meets Jeremy, a poor musician, and the older Ray Porter, an extremely wealthy executive. At different points during the movie, she falls in love with both of them, even though they couldn’t be more different: Ray has loads of money and two homes, Jeremy is struggling in a tiny apartment and can’t afford to see a movie. Ray is divorced and in his 50’s, Jeremy is Mirabelle’s age. Mirabelle is attracted to each of them, but she knows she’ll have to make a decision eventually. And in her words, she can either “hurt now, or hurt later”.
