Annie Proulx
This novel tells the story of two cowboys, Jack and Ennis, who fall in love one summer while herding sheep on Brokeback Mountain. When the summer comes to an end, the two go their separate ways, get married, and start families. Over the years, they manage to come together infrequently to share time together, knowing that they cannot ever have an open relationship with each other. Even though this novel is just 64 pages, Proulx manages to build an unconventional love story about two men, and the intolerance that prohibited their relationship.
