Swimming Upstream

Swimming Upstream

This movie is about the life of Australian swimmer, Tony Fingleton. It starts with his troubled childhood and never meeting the expectations of his drunk father. Even though Tony wins race after race, including gold at the Australian championship, he fails to impress his father, who focuses his attention on Tony’s brothers, and their accomplishments. Eventually, Tony decides to apply to Harvard, where he receives a full scholarship. While going to Harvard is an accomplishment, I was disappointed, as I thought the movie would end with Tony competing in the Olympics. Instead, it ends anti-climactically with him swimming and being timed in an empty pool at Harvard.
