Blink

Blink

Malcolm Gladwell

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I liked The Tipping Point. In this book, Gladwell focuses on how we make decisions and a concept called “thin slicing”. Gladwell claims that many decisions can be made better in the blink of an eye rather than using a long, drawn-out method of deliberation. I agree with many of the points he makes in the book, and I even admit to subconsciously “thin slicing” in my daily life, but I didn’t find any ways to apply his theories to the concsious decisions I make every day. In certain professions, where one consistantly makes similar decisions (such as the marriage counselor Gladwell talks about who “thin slices” couples and can predict with 95% accuracy whether they’re headed for divorce) thin slicing can be used to make faster and better decions. I find that I’m constantly confronted by different types of decisions every day. Still, this was an enjoyable book, and I learned a lot about how humans make decisions and how that affects our life.
