Children of Men

This was a very powerful and moving film. Set in 2027, the movie explores the possibility of human extinction. Humans have lost the ability to procreate and the youngest person in the world is 18 years old. Nearly every city in the world has succumbed to chaos and London is barely holding on to its control over its citizens. When a young woman gives birth to a baby, Theo (Clive Owen) is named her protector and the two face a long journey save the human race. There was a lot that wasn’t said in this movie. For example, no explanation is given for why women have become infertile and we never find out just what the “Human Project” is and why Kee must reach them with her baby. According to Alfonso Cuaron, the Human Project is a symbol of hope for the future and that Kee reaching them means that life will continue on earth. What did come across in this movie was the helplessness and decay of the human race. Cuaron chose infertility as the method to ending life on earth, but it could be any problem that we currently deal with – global warming, terrorism, etc.

I liked the film too. I thought Clive Owen did a brilliant job in an un-Owen like role. Completely understated and un-macho role where you could see despair written all over his face.
