The Poisonwood Bible

The Poisonwood Bible

Barbara Kingsolver

I’ve been reading about 4 different books over the past two months, and I seemed to have finished them all within a week.  That’s the reason for all of the new book posts.  I just couldn’t get into this book.  It’s a longer book, and at times, I felt just on the cusp of really getting sucked in.  But then, I’d falter, leave the book on my bedside stand for a week and finally force myself to get back to reading it.  I especially struggled at the end, but found the middle of the book the most engaging.  The best part of this book is the dialog Kingsolver creates for each of the four main characters: four sisters who travel with their missionary father to a remote village in Africa.  There are parts that had me laughing out loud after reading the girls’ honest and hold-nothing-back commentary.  Overall, it was a slightly depressing novel, detailing the life of a family with good intentions that go wrong somewhere along the way.
