Julie and Julia

Julie and Julia

Julie Powell

After turning 30, and hitting something of a third-life crisis, Julie Powell decides to take on a project very few sane people would attempt.  She dubs the project, the “Julie/Julia Project” and sets the lofty goal of cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” in 365 days.   Before I read this book, I had heard of MtAoFC, but was unaware of the complexity of these recipes.  These recipes are not for the casual cook.  For Ed’s birthday, I decided to try out a measly four recipes from MtAoFC.  It took me nearly 5 hours of cooking to prepare the food.  And I cook for a living!  While the food turned out to be fantastic, it proved to me that Julie Powell’s endeavor of cookign every recipe in Julia Child’s cookbook was not to be taken lightly.  Powell is funny, sarcastic, witty, and self-deprecating throughout the entire book, and it was a great read.
